Dead Twig Spider |
Miagrammopes ? |
|
Secondary undergrowth, Kakamega Forest, Kenya. Dec. 2014. |
This spider looks nothing like a usual spider and this adaptation prevents birds, at least temporarily, from recognizing it as something to eat! If the spider is disturbed in any way it drops like an inanimate object and remain motionless until the threat has passed. The web of these spiders is very unusual also - typically just a single strand between two supports that springs around any insect that alights or collides with it. The silk adheres to prey by virtue of the numerous very fine threads that produce entanglement. Uloboridae -- Cribellate Spider FamilyMore Information: |
