African Wood White |
Leptosia alcesta |
|
Observed in a secondary woodland in Nairobi, Kenya, July 2014. Wing span is less than 4 cm. |
The flight of these small butterflies is a wonder to behold. It seems that rather than directed motion these insects bounce about like a bit of confetti. The common name "flip-flop" describes the movement perfectly. They occur especially in the understory of secondary woodlands where there is dappled sunlight.
