Sac Spider

Observed at Iten, Rift Valley, Kenya. Dec. 2015. Length, not including legs, about 6 mm.

By day sac spiders are normally hidden inside a silken retreat which they construct within a folded leaf or leaves. They emerge at night ranging over vegetation in search of prey. This individual was out of its retreat because of marauding driver ants, Dorylus. There are many similar and not so closely related spiders that were classified as Clubionidae. Identification to species typically requires a preserved specimen and a microscope. There are eight small eyes in two rows. Coloration is very pale brown with few markings.
