Observed on stems of a malvaceae (mallow family), at Nairobi, Kenya, November 2012. |
A mass of frothy bubbles hides within the developing nymph of a spittlebug. There, with a modicum of protection from predators and tropical sun the bug has inserted its piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant's phloem. The bug moves infrequently while feeding on this liquid diet until it finally molts into the adult which is capable of jumping and flight. Cercopidae -- Spittlebug FamilyMore Information: |
