Silky Lichen Moth |
Crambidia (near?) |
|
Observed during daylight hours at Nairobi National Park, Kenya, Oct. 2014. |
The immature stage of this moth is a larva (caterpillar) that feeds perhaps on lichens. The conspicuous color is probably related to toxic chemicals inside the insect's body - a warning to potential insectivores. However, a sunbird was observed catching and perhaps eating another one of these moths. Several were seen on the wing and alighted in woodland habitat.
