Silent Slant-faced Grasshopper

Truxalis ?

a slant-faced grasshopper, possibly Truxalis sp., from Menangai, Kenya, photo © by Michael Plagens

This grasshopper would be well hidden when alighted in tall grass. Menangai Crater, March, 2013. Length, excluding the antennae, is about 50 mm.

The long slanted face and the flattened wedge-shaped antennae serve to distinguish this group of grasshoppers. In addition they lack stidulatory pegs on the legs and so do not make sounds like most grasshoppers.

Acrididae -- Grasshopper Family
