Woody shrub, sometimes very large, has stout thorns arising at the leaf axils. The shiny green leaves have scalloped-toothed margins and are alternate on the stems. Leaf shape elyptical to almost round. Fruits are small, less than 1 cm in diameter and yellow when ripe. Until recently this plant was catagorized into the family Flacourtiaceae.
