HERBACEOUS: Many herbaceous stems up to 70cm long from a tough, woody crown.

FLOWERS: The flowers are small, green and spaced at regular intervals along the slender spikes.

LEAVES: Leaves are elliptical.

RANGE: This plant is native to tropical Africa but is also encountered in other tropical regions through human-caused dispersal.

FRUIT: One seed within each dry seed capsule and this enclosed in a barb-studded pair of bracts..

ARMED. The seed burrs are sharp and will stick to fur or clothing.
