Cholla Cactus, Opuntia exaltata, from Nakuru, Rift Valley, Kenya, photo © by Michael Plagens

Grown as a property boundary fence, Nakuru, Rift Valley, Kenya, Africa. July 2014.

Fences made from wood posts are soon pulverized by termites. Those constructed with steel posts are quick to rust with tropical moisture during the rainy season. Cactus fences on the other hand become more impenetrable with time. All cacti except for a few epiphytic species are native to the Americas. These exotic plants can become established invasives and are undesirable on that account.
