SHRUBBY: Mostly herbaceous growth from woody lower portion; the stems are sharply four-angled. Lateral branches recurve as they thicken and mature thus serving as holdfasts (image lower right). Growing up and through other supporting shrubs reaching 2+ meters in length.

LEAVES: The opposite leaves are triangular to ovate, with rounded teeth along the margins. Short pubescence.

FLOWERS: The flowers are set in closely packed spikes. The corolla is dark blue-purple.
