As the common name implies, this tree is native to Mexico. A number of varieties and subspecies are recognized with a variety of habitat preferences and growth characteristics. Varieties capable of rapid growth and straight boles have been widely propagated around the world. In Kenya extensive plantations of Mexican Cypress can be found from 1500 to 3000 m elevation.
