The herbaceous stems grow along the ground occasionally rooting at the nodes suggesting another common name, Spreading Dayflower. It is pantropical - i.e. it can be found in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. The name Variable Dayflower refers to the range of characteristics within the species, like pubescence, the size of the floral spathe, and presence or absence of glandular hairs.
