Yellow Bauhinia |
Bauhinia tomentosa |
|
Also known as Yellow Orchid Tree, this flowering shrub was found on the grounds of Nairobi National Museum, Kenya. March 2011. |
Small trees or shrubs belonging to the genus Bauhinia include many described species (some 200 per Wikipedia) and display flowers of many colors and shades. Understandably they are popular landscape plants offering shade and beauty. The bi-lobed leaves make them easy to recognize and offer yet another common name: Camel-foot Tree. The bean pods are compressed and have flattened seeds. The flowers often have conspicuously colored centers. The leaves of B. tomentosa have fine hairs providing a velvety texture.
