- Mostly herbaceous stems grow vine-like, trailing close to the soil amid heavy grazing pressure.
- Ray Flowers: No ray flowers.
- Disc Flowers: All the florets are five-lobed and dark purple. The stamens produce white pollen.
- Phyllaries: A single rank of bracts enclose the florets in the head.

- Leaves: The leaves have short petioles and are deltoid in shape.
