A large, spectacular bird of western Kenya forests and edges especially along the rivers. In addition to the bright red crest the primary feathers are also red and are revealed in flight. The bill and a mask about the face is yellow. The remainder of the bird, including a long, broad tail, is deep blue-purple-black. The birds can make loud raucous calls and subsist largely on fruit and buds.
